Natural deodorants are the healthier choice

Posted on: September 1, 2011

Natural deodorants are the healthier choice.

Think about this: traditional over-the-counter antiperspirants are considered drugs under the US Food and Drug Administration!  They all contain a form of aluminum-salt, such as aluminum zirconium, tetrachlorohydrex glycine, or aluminum chloride, among many other forms which affects sweat production, a natural, chemical function of the body. However, recent scientific studies are now seriously questioning the health risks that can be related to antiperspirant use.

Antiperspirants work by blocking your sweat ducts with the aluminum salts.  This is a concern that continues to puzzle scientists for two main reasons: first, the link between aluminum and certain dementia-causing diseases; and more recently, a new link between blocked glands and both breast and prostate cancers.

The potential health risks of aluminum were discovered 25 years ago, when a group of kidney-dialysis patients all suffered a similar form of dementia, after being exposed to aluminum during the dialysis process. As well, aluminum accumulation in the brains of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and ALS sufferers made scientists look more closely at the toxic impact.

Still, medical experts are divided as to whether or not aluminum is a true health concern. On the one hand, the Mayo Clinic states that there is no related health risk associated with aluminum.  However, agencies like the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences continue to question the risks related to aluminum absorption through diet and lifestyle habits.

Aluminum-blocked sweat ducts resulting from long-term and daily use of antiperspirants, have also become a concern for scientists who are currently studying the link between increased cases of breast and prostate cancers, and excess hormone absorption caused by antiperspirant use.

The Feinberg Medical School at Northwestern University has recently published findings on this particular health-related risk. They consider that "chronic axillary apocrine sweat gland obstruction by aluminum-salt based antiperspirants is an overlooked contribution to the global parallel rise in breast and prostate cancer incidence and mortality."

The good news is consumers can ensure their safety and reduce the health risks by avoiding aluminum, petrochemicals and parabens (another dangerous preservative) found in traditional over-the-counter antiperspirants, and choosing a truly healthy deodorant that does not contain these potentially toxic ingredients.

Concerned consumers must become informed consumers.  All skin care in Canada must legally use Latin-based names for ingredients. By reading product labels and getting familiar with this new INCI nomenclature, consumers can make informed decisions about the skin and body care products they choose for themselves and their families.

And just because a product claims to be "certified organic" does not mean that it contains even 20% organic ingredients, what about the other ingredients? A truly ethical product will list which ingredients are certified organic, listing all ingredients in order, from the largest volume to the smallest.

An excellent alternative to traditional antiperspirants is an organic or natural deodorant such as the new Organic4Nature® natural deodorant, made from plant-based ingredients.
